About chiptuning and ecotuning
You can philosophize for hours on the subject of chip tuning. Often questions arise, which I would like to answer here.
Is the performance increase harmful to my engine? What mileage may the car have?
This question is not one hundred percent clear to answer. But I can give you my experience of many years and that of several customers and friends. Especially for diesel tuning, you can say that the boost pressure and the injection amount are raised.Higher boost pressure means a higher load on the turbocharger and, with the higher injection quantity, the exhaust gas temperature increases in the full load range. However, it must be said here that modern diesel engines have numerous protective mechanisms to ensure that they are not operated beyond their thermal limits. Among them are performance limiters for exhaust gas temperature, coolant temperature, oil temperature, charge air temperature. Direct damage to the engine or. Of the individual components is therefore not to be expected. It is therefore possible to run the vehicle "full throttle". A premature wear of the turbocharger is to be expected, however one can assume here a small factor.
Of course, it is important to follow the basic rules, which also apply to series production engines. This means: Warming up, cold driving and regular oil changes.
The bigger problem of today's engines are rather the auxiliary aggregates as for example the exhaust gas recirculation or the swirl flaps. These devices serve mostly only the adherence to environmental standards. The same applies to the diesel particulate filter. Already from a mileage of 200.000 km these components make problems, because mostly there is a coking or something like that. Otherwise, the engines can be trusted to increase performance even with high mileage. Even well above 300.000 km rarely cause problems.
Companies which offer performance increases from 100.The customers who refuse to run the engine at more than 000 km only do so for one reason. You can not take out a warranty with your partner such as NSA. From a technical point of view, there is nothing to be said against this, assuming technical maintenance.
What is the situation with the particulate filter in diesel vehicles??
The function of the soot particle filter is monitored by the engine control unit. If a diesel particulate filter is filled with soot, a cleaning process is started. This process is necessary because the soot particles can only be oxidized at a certain operating temperature of the filter. This operating temperature is reached in the partial load range z.B. Not reached during city driving. The engine control unit monitors the loading condition of the diesel particulate filter by means of the exhaust backpressure. If the filter is filled accordingly, the temperature of the exhaust gas is artificially increased. This is done by post-injection as well as by throttling the supplied fresh air mass. The exhaust gas becomes hotter and the filter empties due to oxidation.
So that this cleaning process does not take place too often, from experience the additional power is limited to about 35- 50 HP (depending on the number of cylinders).. Higher power would clog the particulate filter too often. The higher exhaust backpressure would thus put more strain on the turbocharger. A higher fuel input into the engine oil would be expected.
The increase in performance can be detected during the inspection or at the MOT?
The diagnostic functions contained in the engine software are not affected. Also no error codes are deposited, which are directly connected with the increase in output.
What is the benefit of so-called ECOTUNING?
Saving fuel has become popular in recent years. The individual tuning companies promise up to 20% savings. However, it must be said that almost no tuner offers "real" Ecotuning. In the characteristic diagrams mostly no changes are made at the places, which bring exactly these savings. The tuners then say that you can now drive a gear higher, etc… This is in my eyes an empty promise, because customers who pay attention to consumption, always drive in the highest possible gear. Is it now possible to reduce consumption?
Yes! However, the combustion must be changed, especially in the partial-load range. Through years of experience, it is possible to reduce consumption by about 0.5 to 1l, depending on the displacement. With removal of the particle filter still additionally 0,5 – 1l less are possible on 100km.. A 3. 2l less.. In the city. In intercity / highway operation!. In the city and intercity / highway operation!
How is that possible?
Today's strict Euro standards require very low nitrogen oxide (NOx) levels. The manufacturer can only achieve this if, especially in the partial load range, the combustion is "set" in favor of the environment. Also, the exhaust gas recirculation is only there to reduce the NOx values. Other instruments include the adjustment of the injection timing to "late". The engine is therefore not running at the "thermodynamic optimum point". With the software modification I can change this. The fuel is better utilized, the engine consumes less.
