The car rolls into the parking lot, master rolls down the windows a little, gets out, closes the doors and goes in the direction of the supermarket. The little mongrel dog Benny looks after him briefly and lies down patiently. It is pleasantly warm on this day. Not too hot yet. Inside the car it is even a little cool, because until now the automatic air conditioning was responsible for keeping the temperature constant.

The doors of the supermarket open automatically, master enters and hurries purposefully to the shelf with the product, which he had forgotten with the weekly purchase.

Meanwhile, it is already getting warmer in the car. No air conditioner cools more. Benny turns around in his box. Lies down comfortably. Master will be back soon.

In the supermarket the drawer with the desired product is empty. A seller takes the goods out of the warehouse. Master is waiting.

The chocolate in the glove compartment is slowly becoming soft. Benny is also getting warm now. He begins to pant a little and sits up.

The supermarket employee is back. Master rushes to the cashier. On the way there, an important customer of his company approaches him. A short conversation must be.

Benny meanwhile feels really heated. He pants more. Starts to look for his master. He doesn't notice the fresh air that should come through the lowered window on this windless day. The paws glow, the nose becomes dry.

Meanwhile his master is standing at the checkout line. It is not long, soon it will be his turn. But at this moment the cashiers change. A young employee relieves her colleague, she sits down, puts her cash register in the holder provided, logs in, changes the roll of receipt paper, fills up change. Time passes.

Benny is getting restless. He is very thirsty, hot, and the floor of his box has become uncomfortably warm. It begins to tiger up and down, as far as its box permits it. With his paw he paws at the door of the box, but of course it stays closed.

A customer who had a costly exchange now carefully counts out the individual cents from her wallet to hand over appropriately. It's his master's turn in a minute.

The chocolate in the glove compartment has turned liquid. Like a dark stream it runs over the warning vest. Forms a small chocolate lake at the bottom of the glove box. Benny lies down exhausted on his side and pants flatly. Just close your eyes for a moment ..

Horrified Benny's master tears open the door. He lifts his exhausted four-legged friend out of the oven-hot car, lays him down in the shade, lets surrounding supermarket customers hand him water, drips it on his dog's nose, soaks a towel and puts it around his paws. Slowly Benny comes to his senses again. He is not so hot now. There is master. He knew it: You can rely on your master. He'll be back ..

So that no dog must make similar experiences in this spring or summer like Benny, whose owner wanted to get "only times briefly" something in the supermarket, TASSO proclaimed also in this year again the action dog in the baking oven. Help us, and educate dog owners about the major dangers. Help, my cat has run away: What should I do?

Cats escape ten times more often than dogs. This is in the nature of things, because many cats may enjoy outdoor access. They are also more shy than dogs and have an easier time hiding. That a cat escapes in the course of its life times, is anything but unlikely. All the more important is the identification with a transponder and the registration at TASSO. Of course, owners of missing animals do not only rely on someone finding their pet, but also search for their missing darling themselves. In addition to distributing search posters and spreading the search messages via the Internet, this also includes active searches. But what is the best way to proceed? What helps and what one should absolutely refrain from?

Experts in this topic are the employees in the TASSO emergency call center. Every day, they receive hundreds of calls from desperate cat owners who are looking for their animal friends, note down sightings and record lost and found animal cases. To give tips for the search, we have therefore collected some advice from our colleagues.

Searching for cats is hard work

The first rule is to stay calm! It's hard to do, but panicked shouting will scare a frightened cat more than draw it out. Rustling with favorite treats, on the other hand, can help the animal to show itself. Under bushes, under cars, on trees, in small cracks … There are countless hiding places for cats. Especially for animals that have run away from fright, almost no gap is too small to offer protection. Care and patience are needed.

Ask the neighbors if the cat is on their property and ask to look in garages, cellars and sheds yourself. A cat may not show itself to strangers, but will come out to its familiar person. Another tip: Take a flashlight with you. Also during the day, because if a cat hides under something, it will look in the direction of the threat when shining into it and thereby the light reflects in the eyes.

Runaway apartment cats are especially in danger

Special commitment is required in the search for escaped apartment cats. The animals do not know the life outside and are not sensitized for dangers, for example by the traffic. If cats have fallen out of windows or off balconies, they are often still around. Not least because they may have been injured in the fall. It is therefore advisable to set up a protected place outside for missing apartment cats. A piece of clothing that smells like the familiar person can help attract the cat. Further a scent trail can be put with used cat litter. Ideally, the animal recognizes its own scent and follows it. Putting out food, however, is not such a good idea, because that also attracts other animals and the sought-after animal may not dare to come near.

Another option is to lay a trail with a particularly delicious smell for the animal. For example, the liquid from a can of tuna can be mixed with water and splashed on the floor as a trail. At the end of the trail is waiting. On the fact that the animal shows itself. Other cats that are attracted can be easily chased away. Search dog teams can also be used to find missing cats. There are numerous associations in which volunteers with their dogs are engaged in the search for missing animals. Of course, these tips do not fit every situation and there are many more tricks that can make finding a lost cat easier. We hope that our advice can help you in case of emergency and we are always at your disposal if you should ever need us.

Animal friendly ideas for a great Easter celebration

The Easter treats have already been ready for weeks in the supermarkets, everywhere is already festively decorated and slowly families begin to plan for the soon upcoming holidays: Easter is just around the corner. Time to think about how these beautiful days will be spent and what food will be on the table.

Unfortunately, a traditional Easter means enormous animal suffering, because on these days not only lamb and rabbit are on the menu in many places, but also plenty of baked goods with egg are consumed. In addition, there are the many thousands of eggs that are blown out, colorfully painted and hung on the traditional Easter shrub. Information approximately around the animal protection problems in the rabbit fattening as well as with the egg production finds you in the range animal protection topics on the TASSO homepage. There are great animal-friendly alternatives for all Easter traditions. Just give it a try.

Doing crafts together and having fun without the suffering of animals

An animal-friendly Easter does not have to mean less fun and joy. For example, make Easter bunny window pictures or Easter nests with your children instead of blowing out eggs or buying eggs that have already been industrially dyed. Alternatively, you can work with salt dough, shape it into egg shapes and then paint it. Wooden eggs are also great for decorating. If egg alternatives are out of the question for you, please pay special attention to the origin when buying eggs, because there are serious differences in the way laying hens are kept. Organic or free-range eggs can be identified by the numbers 0 and 1 respectively in the first position of the stamp on the egg.

For the Easter nest of the children there are likewise many alternatives to sweet treats with milk and egg. Again, do-it-yourself is always a good idea, because then you know which products were used. With finished products such as baked goods, pasta and sweets, for example, information about the husbandry system from which the eggs used come is not mandatory and therefore rarely found. Just as little exists with already colored eggs a marking obligation for the respective attitude system. And this, although animal protection organizations, like also TASSO, demand for years an appropriate marking.

The TASSO Easter menu

The classical holiday roast does not necessarily have to belong to the successful Easter celebration. Why also? Instead of consuming fattening rabbits that have been fattened for 90 days under conditions that are contrary to animal welfare, there are many alternatives for a great Easter menu. We have times with the colleagues inquired and us tasty prescriptions let give, from which we arranged an animalleidfreien TASSO Easter menu. It begins with Daniel's lentil coconut soup. Afterwards Natalijas colorful Easter strudel follows, which arrives for example with children very well, and for the dessert there is Lauras easy red fruit jelly. To the coffee the TASSO Easter menu offers Lisas freshly. Super simple carrot cake. Look nevertheless simply times purely and get you a few suggestions for a mad Easter with your family!

The heavy search for a new dwelling

"For more than two years I have been looking for a new apartment."In Sabrina Falke's e-mail box the rejections pile up. Already more than 40 times the landlords "No! " Said to the young woman in permanent employment. Your little lady.

With pet to find a rental apartment is difficult. Many animal owners know that. The first hurdle is that an animal belongs to the family at all. Even more difficult than with a cat is the search with a dog. If the dog is then also still large, it is almost impossible to convince a landlord of itself and its animal. TASSO coworker Sabrina Falke knows that. Although Lady with only scarcely forty centimeters shoulder height and not even eight kilograms is really a small and very calm representative of her kind and may accompany her mistress each day to the work, the search of Sabrina Falke remained so far unsuccessful. "Finding an affordable apartment in the Main-Taunus area is difficult anyway. But I have the feeling that it is almost hopeless with a dog," she says dejectedly.

Usually the search for an apartment fails even before contact is made. Because in most advertisements an animal husbandry is still categorically excluded. In the meantime, a ban on keeping animals in a rental agreement is no longer legally effective at all, because it puts a tenant at an unreasonable disadvantage. "Neither the small animal attitude nor the dog and cat attitude may be forbidden overall, that decided the Federal High Court already", knows the woman barrister Ann Kathrin Fries active for TASSO. However, this does not mean that landlords must always allow dogs and cats to be kept. "According to the ruling of the Federal Court of Justice, the landlord must always weigh the interests of all parties involved on a case-by-case basis. Here it must consider among other things also that the dog and cat attitude belong meanwhile to the life. Only if in this balancing a legitimate interest of the landlord in a ban comes out, the refusal in individual cases is possible."

For apartment seekers, this is only a small consolation, because if the landlord does not want to rent to someone who keeps an animal, no one can force him to do so. In case of doubt he will simply decide for another tenant without giving any reasons. Straight one on at present very strained housing market it might not lack at prospective customers.

But what can you do as an apartment seeker? "It is well comprehensible that tenants in the emergency conceal or deny their dogs or cats. Legally, however, one can only advise to play with open cards from the beginning, especially if there are several animals. This is not only fair, but also legally correct. It should not be concealed or denied if a dog or cat moves in, as such fraudulent misrepresentation could entitle the landlord to challenge and terminate the lease agreement. Even if a tenancy already exists and a dog or a cat is to move in, this should absolutely be discussed with the landlord, if the attitude is not expressly permitted in the tenancy agreement. It is best to have a written agreement."In the long term, the only thing to do is to be patient and honest. And to hope that the negative attitude of many landlords will gradually change through positive experiences and exemplary pet owners.

Of course, there are apartment owners who are okay with tenants moving in with animals and have had good experiences with them. The fact that cats scratch the walls and dogs bark all day long are, after all, absolute exceptions, but unfortunately they have led to the fact that pet owners who want to rent an apartment have bad chances. Even if you are not currently looking for an apartment, always be an exemplary pet owner and a friendly tenant with whose four-legged friend there are no conflicts. Your landlord may decide to rent to pet owners again at a later date.

Pregnancy and cat ownership

Cats do not have to go to the animal shelter

Expectant parents and cat owners are repeatedly faced with the question of what should happen to their cat during the course of pregnancy: Eventually, they would have to consider where to move the animal that could possibly infect the expectant mother with toxoplasmosis. It is assumed that contact with the cuddly tiger is in principle a threat to the life of the unborn child. "Unfortunately, due to prejudice, many cats are given to the shelter when a baby is announced. Animal shelters are often overcrowded." Explains shelta director Heike Engelhart.

TASSO e.V. Explains what has to be considered, so that no cat has to leave its home.

It is not the litter box that poses the greatest danger

The main argument for moving the cat out is usually the risk of infection with the infectious disease toxoplasmosis. Studies show that the main source of the pathogen is raw or undercooked meat, such as tartar, steaks, salami and sausage. Pregnant women should absolutely refrain from eating this food. According to research, about one in three women has been infected with toxoplasmosis during her lifetime. The good thing is that once a woman has gone through an infection, she builds up antibodies and is usually protected from further infections.

In principle, pregnant cat owners are well advised to be tested for toxoplasmosis antibodies. Although this blood test is not part of routine maternal care, it can quickly clarify whether the woman is immune and therefore there is no cause for particular concern. If the pregnant woman has no antibodies in her blood, she can repeat the test at regular intervals in order to detect and treat a possible infection promptly. In any case: discuss the topic in detail with your gynecologist.

Hygiene in dealing with cats is the be-all and end-all

The risk of infection through contact with cats is much lower than through contact and consumption with raw meat products. Nevertheless, cat owners must know that toxoplasmosis pathogens can also be found in cat feces. Mainly affected are outdoor cats, which ingest and excrete the parasite, for example, by eating hunted mice. Indoor cats are unlikely to be carriers of toxoplasmosis unless they are fed raw meat.

Tips for pregnant cat owners

Cats don't have to leave home when offspring are announced. If the following rules are observed, there is usually no risk of infection, even if your own pet is a carrier of toxoplasmosis:

The veterinarian can test cats for toxoplasmosis antibodies. If the test is positive, a fecal examination should be performed to determine if the cat is shedding toxoplasma. In any case, special caution is required when handling this cat.

Pregnant women should wash their hands thoroughly after any contact with the cat.

Pregnant women should leave the cleaning of the cat toilet to someone else. If no one is available, they will always wear disposable gloves and discard them after each use. Afterwards it is still valid: Wash your hands.
