Life moves into the hammer mill. The new Autobahn Südwest GmbH has its headquarters in the industrial ruin in Obertürkheim. By the end of 2021, 250 employees are to manage more than 1000 kilometers of freeway from here.

Obertürkheim – It's the first step toward revitalizing the hammer mill. On Friday, Baden-Württemberg's Minister of Transport Winfried Hermann visited the former factory building on Augsburger Straße. From the 1. January, the new Autobahn Südwest GmbH starts operations there. Spread over five floors, more than 250 employees are to be working by the end of 2021. "A beautiful location," Hermann emphasized with a view of the vineyards.

For more than 20 years, the site of the former Nürnberger Bund at Augsburger Strasse 744 stood empty. Numerous attempts to revive the industrial ruin on the outskirts of Mettingen failed. About ten years ago, Aurelis Real Estate GmbH took over the approximately 4800-square-meter site with the goal of installing a mix of offices and warehouse space. The company's own ambition to create more than 300 jobs in the borough has been brought a great deal closer with the new main tenant. In our search for a building "that is large enough and also has good public transportation connections, we found what we were looking for in Obertürkheim," explains branch manager Christine Baur-Fewson.

With the change in the law by the Bundestag and Bundesrat, the responsibility of the all-German highways falls from 1. January of next year by the federal states to Autobahn GmbH, which was founded specifically for this purpose in 2018. In addition to the headquarters in Berlin, the tasks such as planning, construction, operation, maintenance, financing and asset management are carried out by ten branch offices. The headquarters of the Autobahn Southwest Branch is now located in Obertürkheim. Other branch offices are located in Vaihingen, Freiburg, Karlsruhe, Heidelberg and Heilbronn. However, most of the tasks for the approximately 1050 kilometers of highways in Baden-Württemberg and parts of Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse are controlled from headquarters.

After one and a half years of construction, the new rooms are as good as ready for occupancy. The old factory building has been turned into a functional office building in close coordination with the investor. "It also makes ecological sense to use a brownfield site," Baur-Fewson emphasized. All offices are openly designed with glass doors, communication islands are to be created in the relatively wide corridors, old concrete girders with graffiti were partially left in place and incisions in the building structure, in which terraces were created, provide the necessary brightness. "We will certainly use this in the summer," is the leader convinced.

With just under 6,000 square meters, the new Autobahn headquarters will take over most of the existing space in the main Hammerwerk building, which runs parallel to the rail lines. It also includes 50 parking spaces in the new parking garage on the east side. Hermann can still imagine greenery for it: "That would fit in with the character of the Neckar valley."

Baur-Fewson does not see a problem in the lack of proximity to the autobahn. "An administration can sit anywhere" – now in the hammer mill with a view of the vineyards.
