Natural gas filling stations are not nearly as widespread in Germany as filling stations with liquid gas pumps, and if you live in the so-called "arse end of the world", you have to reckon with driving a good 30 kilometers in practically all directions to reach the next natural gas filling station. Since puts into perspective if necessary. The savings potential is enormous – but the Fiat Panda CNG can't do anything about that. It delivers not only a good overall range with its natural gas and gasoline tank, but also real economy. One can save also with the vehicle tax, only 18 euro annually. With the 2-cylinder it is quite agile, but the engine gets loud. The CNG is only available in the upscale Lounge equipment, but this also brings an entry price of 15.690, – euro with itself.

Then belong but in addition to the power steering Dualdrive with City Mode, power windows in front, central locking, ESC and ABS, ISOFIX, central locking with remote control, radio with CD player, fog lights and air conditioning also 15-inch alloy wheels, leather steering wheel, exterior mirrors and door handles in body color, exterior mirrors electrically adjustable and heated, rear parking sensors and Uconnect radio with 6 speakers, Bluetooth and multifunction buttons in the steering wheel to the standard scope of supply.

Optional is then above all the winter package for 500, – euro with heatable windshield, seat heating in front and center tunnel of the 4×4 version to mention, the Flex package 1 with asymmetrically split folding rear seat bench and 3. Seat as well as folding front passenger seat for 350, – euro, the automatic climate control for 400, – euro, tinted window panes behind 190, – euro, a uni special color 300, – euro and the metallic lacquer finishes is to be had for 490, – euro.

Do you still remember: Fiat Panda – the great box. Square, practical, good. From the first point, the current Panda has come a long way, even if the design is not necessarily in the first place, but it is nevertheless pleasing and modern. If you really want to stand out, the CROSS is the best choice. The only thing my current Panda has in common with it is the first letter: CNG. And thus it wants to be not only practical but also economical, and with the cheap natural gas it creates that also.

My test car was running on gasoline or natural gas, and depending on which fuel you use, the engine develops either 63 kW / 85 hp (gasoline) or 59 kW / 80 hp (natural gas). The torque of 145 Nm is at 1.900 rpm, in economy mode this is reduced to 110 Nm at 2.500 rpm reduced. All this feels. Hears one also. The small 2-cylinder-engine with an overhead camshaft becomes very pithy when one starts. Loud when you accelerate then high – it rattles as if the exhaust is broken. In addition, the clutch is late, so you have to accelerate even more when starting. In natural gas mode, it is a bit quieter, the loud rattling when you rev up quickly is reduced here.

If you have normal driving speed on it, it runs then quite quietly, but you quickly get into an underdriving, already at speed 100 in the 5. Gear, if one must only very little from the gas. Otherwise it accelerates beautifully high, whether one drives with gasoline or gas, the difference from 0 to 100 in 12 and/or. 12.8 seconds I hardly felt. It's a different story with the top speed, although even that with 170 resp. 168 km/h is hardly apart, it pulls with gasoline lively up to then, while with gas already with 150 km/h the air is out and it goes rather restrained further.

Light and shade are also close together in the gearshift. Positive is the handling of the five-speed manual gearbox. The gears are to be steered on quite short and exact ways tautly, hardly a bump about the idle to feel. What is always missing is a sixth gear.

In addition, the shift recommendation is very optimistic, I had the feeling the engine dies before loud Untertourigkeit almost, he jerked and vibrated, but the display still wanted to know one up shifted. By the time it says "Shift down a gear, please", I had long since reached for the gearshift lever.

In any case, you often reach for the gearshift at the wrong moment to shift up, especially in faster acceleration phases, because then the engine roars at the top of its lungs, but then literally collapses and falls into a hole and then takes seconds to regain real power. The small 2-cylinder Panda is lively, more than the technical data would suggest, but the connections often don't fit. Best functioned with the connections, if one turns off up to the red range and only then shifts, but who wants to heat already constantly in such a way.

Fiat gives the consumption with 5,8 l gasoline or 3,9 m³ natural gas in the city, outside of the city it is 3,8 l or 2,6 m³, in the mix 4,5 liters gasoline and 3,1 m³ gas. The combined CO2 emissions are 106 g/km (85 in CNG mode), and it complies with Euro 6. I have determined in mixed operation by refueling easily 2 liters of gasoline more. The CNG Panda does not have an automatic start-stop system. The tank holds 35 liters for gasoline, natural gas goes in 21.8 m³.

The chassis of the Fiat Panda CNG finds a good compromise between comfort and sportiness, it lies quietly on the road even with the rather short wheelbase. And it allows high cornering speeds if necessary, which are only limited by the poorly contoured seats, other than the vehicle, which keeps itself bravely on course in fast corners, the driver can hardly keep himself on the seat.

The steering is also nice and tight and decently accurate, gives decent feedback and if you're driving in the city, you can use the city mode to move the whole thing with your little finger.

The chassis copes quite well with cobblestones, but here it gets a bit noisy and the dashboard starts to crackle here and there. At highway speed 130 are the Abroll-. Engine noise is loud but not really disturbing. Wind noises are then hardly to be heard, become only over it loudly. And the Panda still lies quietly. Safe on the asphalt. This doesn't change when you bring it to its top speed of 170 km/h, but now it gets consistently loud in the vehicle.

That the Panda wants to be above all practical shows the tailgate that takes up almost the entire rear with the low and well protected loading edge (the rear apron is only partially protected) and the resulting generous opening.

So I'm loading. And here the trunk is quite smooth and usable, under the rather flimsy floor is a styrofoam box for all sorts of small things, underneath is the natural gas tank, but it only has a tire repair kit on board. But it still manages a load volume of 200 liters, only 25 liters less than those without CNG.

Fiat panda cng

As soon as this is no longer sufficient, a pull on the rear seatback is enough and it folds forward, increasing the load volume to 870 liters. A foldable front passenger seat back is available as an option, which allows the transport of long items. The payload is limited with the CNG variant on 395 kg, thus only slightly less. The permitted roof load is 55 kg.

If I use the rear seats for passenger transport, it is of course clear that it is a small car, for children everything no problem, but as a 1.80 m person I do not get in the back behind a driver's seat set to 1.80 m, once I'm in, the knees are rammed deep into the front seat and also the backrest is quite steep, I sit a bit uncomfortable and bump my head almost to the ceiling, is close to the side of the roof bar. Longitudinal seat adjustment is not provided for the CNG variant.
