Stylish appearance, exclusive equipment and cultivated sportiness – the new S-Class Coupé from Mercedes-Benz combines the classic proportions of a sporty, large coupé with modern luxury and pioneering technology. As a world premiere, the breathtaking second car can be equipped with the MAGIC BODY CONTROL suspension system with cornering function on request. Additional technical highlights are head-up display and touchpad. Expressive full-LED front headlights with 47 Swarovski crystals each provide a unique appearance on request.
The success of the new S-Class impressively demonstrates the status of Mercedes-Benz in the luxury segment. The new Coupé underlines this position in an exclusive way. The large coupe has always been at the top of our model range, and that's why it's now called the S-Class again, underlines Ola Källenius of the divisional board of Mercedes-Benz Cars.
With the world premiere of the active curve tilting function, the developers demonstrate the possibilities offered by Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive: The vehicle leans into the curve in a manner similar to a motorcyclist, thus reducing the lateral acceleration acting on the occupants. Especially on country roads this means more driving fun and comfort for the customers.
The new S-Class Coupé will be in dealerships in the second half of 2014.
Start with V 8 engine
The two-door model is initially equipped with the 4.663 cm3 V8 biturbo power unit available. The S 500 coupe has a rated power of 335 kW (455 hp), and the maximum torque is 700 Nm. The emotional sound of the exhaust system contributes significantly to the sporty driving experience.
"Intelligent" Assistants
The new Coupé is available with many new assistance systems that make driving even more comfortable and even safer. The Intelligent Drive systems include PRE-SAFE® Brake with Pedestrian Detection, DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot, Brake Assist BAS PLUS with Crossing Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and Night View Assist Plus.
The COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS already installed in the standard vehicle has an additional function in addition to distance and collision warning in conjunction with adaptive brake assist: if there is a persistent risk of collision and the driver fails to react, the system can also perform autonomous braking up to speeds of more than 100 km/h (62 mph), thus reducing the severity of accidents with slower-moving or stopping vehicles.
The PRE-SAFE® preventive occupant protection system has been expanded to include PRE-SAFE PLUS adds that can detect an impending rear-end collision and warn following traffic. If the risk of collision persists, the system can firmly brake the stationary vehicle before a rear-end collision, as well as immediately prior to impact, the PRE-SAFE® Activate seat belt pretensioners. This minimizes the risk of whiplash injuries.
Extremely low wind noise was the declared development goal for the S-Class Coupé. This has been achieved with an optimized bodyshell and a new door sealing concept. The S-Class Coupé is the quietest production car in the world in terms of wind noise. Outstandingly luxurious. Comfortable interior is the order of the day. The AIR-BALANCE package, for example, with its fragrancing and ionization components and additional air purification via activated charcoal filter, is available, as is the electric armrest heating as part of the Heat Comfort package. The ENERGIZING massage function based on the hot-stone principle is available for the front seats in the Seat Comfort package (optional equipment).
In cooperation with the high-end audio specialist Burmester, two particularly high-quality audio systems have been developed: the Burmester®Surround Sound System and the Burmester® High-end 3D surround sound system.
The design: sensual clarity in its most beautiful form
Our new S-Class coupe is one of the most beautiful coupes ever, with the most radical aesthetic change from its predecessor, says Gorden Wagener, vice president of design Daimler AG. The sensual flowing silhouette forms a perfect symbiosis in interaction with the clear progressive design language and brings our philosophy of sensual clarity exactly to the point.
The exterior: flowing silhouette of perfect proportions
The S-Class coupe features characteristic rear-wheel drive proportions, accentuated by the signature dropping line typical of Mercedes. The long hood with its striking lines and powerdomes, the squat greenhouse with high curb, the pronounced wheel arches and large wheels (18 to 20 inches) and the visually wide rear underpin the claim of the S-Class Coupe as a masterpiece of automotive driving culture. With a wheelbase of 2945 mm, the coupe is 5027 mm long, 1899 mm wide and 1411 mm high.
Swarovski crystals shape the light
The full-LED headlights with the iconic eyebrow as daytime running lights give an extremely confident, characteristic look. In the S-Class Coupé, the eyebrow is further developed by a semicircular counter-swing. In combination with the standard LED Intelligent Light system, a unique front headlamp with a total of 47 Swarovski crystals is available. 17 angular crystals form the torch-shaped daytime running lights, 30 round ones the turn signals.
The S-Class Coupé comes as standard with a panoramic roof that extends over two-thirds of the entire roof area and is around 150 percent larger in terms of visual impact than in its predecessor.
The interior: Modern luxury as avant-garde design
The interior design of the new S-Class Coupé offers a fascinating combination of sculpturally sensual volume bodies and clear geometries of the basic architecture. Appearance of value, manufacturing quality and outstanding haptics stimulate all the senses of the passengers, so that the interior represents the ultimate in modern luxury. The cockpit of the S-Class Coupé impresses with its architecture. Creates a unique character in the upper coupé segment. This concept also allows the large two-part TFT display in widescreen format to be prominently displayed suspended in front of this decorative panel. The sporty, accentuated high center console dips underneath. Extends into the rear area. The special character of the interior is achieved by using the highest quality materials, surfaces, color combinations and seam patterns.
Both the front and rear seats have a sporty character, with the two rear seats designed as distinct individual seats. The seat belts of the front seats are integrated into the rear side trim without interfering with the side line when the windows are open, and are easily accessible to passengers by means of belt bringers.
Less distraction: head-up display
Like a jet, the optional head-up display blends important information directly into the driver's field of vision in the windshield. The system provides information on speed, speed limits, navigation instructions and notifications from driver assistance systems.
Less lateral forces: Active curve tilt function
A world first: with the help of the cornering function, the Coupé corners like a motorcyclist or skier. The lateral acceleration acting on the occupants is reduced in a similar way to driving in a steep curve, with the passengers sitting more firmly in the seat. Especially on country roads, the new cornering function offers more driving pleasure and comfort. The goal is not to achieve higher cornering speeds, but a new kind of driving experience: gliding elegantly through the curves.
The innovative chassis system detects this with the help of the stereo camera behind the windshield, which looks up to 15 meters ahead and detects the curvature of the road, as well as with an additional lateral acceleration sensor. The curve tilt function can be selected as one of three driving modes (Curve, Comfort, Sport) using the ABC switch and is active in a speed range from 15 to 180 km/h (62 to 180 mph).
Emotionally sporty sound: exhaust system with flaps
The emotional sound of the exhaust system makes a decisive contribution to the sporty driving experience. Low-frequency noise components provide a richer, sportier sound. The powerful sound can be experienced as soon as the S-Class Coupé is started up.
