I will drive this car until it rusts: At least, that's the intention of many a car owner until the technical inspection is due, and the chances of older vehicles being re-registered are not so good. But thanks to more and more plastics used in cars today, the days of the rusting car are almost over. In a modern car, about 25 percent of the more than 7.000 components made of plastic, with an upward trend.
Metal, however, is still an essential component of automotive construction. More than half of the modern car is made of steel and ferrous materials. For the parts of the body that are exposed in the event of a collision, steel is still the most important component. But there is more than just one type of steel: By adding metals such as manganese, nickel and chromium, steel producers have responded to the increasingly demanding requirements of auto manufacturers. They have adapted their products and now contribute to significant weight savings and thus lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of modern cars. This means that steel will continue to play a role in the future: Over the next 30 years, the steel industry expects the value of orders from the European automotive industry alone to increase by around 25 percent; much of this will be processed into new high-strength lightweight steels for automotive bodies. However, steel in a car has one major disadvantage: if not treated properly, the car can rust after a short period of time. Therefore, after painting, the cars are sealed with a paste of PVC plastisol, which protects all metallic interfaces from water penetration. This lightweight coating also seals the underbody of the vehicle, where it protects the chassis from grit (stone chips) and dirt, even at high speeds, and minimizes corrosion.
