MTV Awards: Justin Bieber and Katy Perry best artists

Canadian teen heartthrob Justin Bieber and California singer Katy Perry named best artists of 2013 at MTV awards show. But with two prizes the US rapper Eminem was the winner of the 20. European Music Awards (EMA) gala on Sunday night in Amsterdam. In front of thousands of cheering fans, the U.S. singer Miley Cyrus had the show themed "Out of Space" opens. In a sexy astronaut suit she had floated from a replica spaceship into the Ziggo Dome.

Eminem not only won the award for Best Hip Hop, but was also honored with the Global Icon Award. The white rapper is now with 13 EMAs the most successful star in the 20-year history of the awards.

The singer of the band Thirty Seconds To Mars called for "a few moments" Rest on in memory of the victims of the typhoon in the Philippines.

Justin Bieber, who was voted best male artist by fans for the fourth year in a row, did not make it to Amsterdam. On the other hand, 29-year-old Katy Perry, who beat Lady Gaga, among others, in the voting, thanked her fans personally and also performed her hit Unconditionally.

The big favorites, however, came away empty-handed. Justin Timberlake was nominated for 5 of the total of 17 trophies. As recently as August, he had taken home four MTV Video Music Awards, the American counterpart to the EMAs. Lady Gaga did not receive a prize either.

The US rappers Macklemore& Ryan Lewis, who were also nominated five times, still got the EMA in the category Best New.

In keeping with the show’s theme, many fans and stars showed up in glitter suits. Accompanied by numerous extras dressed as aliens, the singer of the US band LMFAO, Redfoo, presented the show in ever-changing outfits: from skimpy glittery underpants to a slamming moon man suit.

With tension the appearance of Miley Cyrus was expected. In August, she caused a scandal with a lascivious dance in her underwear. Now the 20-year-old singer kept it comparatively subtle. Except for a joint, which she took out of her evening bag at the end of the show and lit up on the open stage. She celebrated the trophy for the best video of her hit "Wrecking Ball".

The 20. The 13th edition of the MTV Awards, broadcast live by 60 MTV stations around the world, was celebrated with numerous live performances by global stars, including Kings of Leon, Robin Thicke, rock band The Killers and Bruno Mars. The hit song of the Hawaiian singer "Locked out of Heaven had millions of fans voted the best song of 2013.

There was also a prize for Germany: the band Tokio Hotel received an EMA for Biggest Fans. The award for Best World Wide Act went to Chinese singer Chris Lee. Lena, who was also nominated in this category, had previously won the Best German Act award.

The first MTV Europe Music Awards had been held in Berlin in 1994, and in 2012 around 40 million people watched the show from Frankfurt. Next year, the awards are to be presented in Glasgow, Scotland.
