"yes, i have spoken to the medi managers", wolfgang heyder confirms at the request of this newspaper. "But we’re still in the discovery phase, and we’ve talked about the basics. nothing is definitely fixed yet."
with this, the former managing director of brose bamberg contradicts the usually very well-informed sports journalist david pick, who had already reported heyder’s engagement at medi bayreuth as perfect on twitter. However, heyder does not deny that the task in bayreuth appeals to him: "bayreuth is a traditional basketball location with a good fan culture – and certainly an interesting address."
Medi is keeping a low profile
medi bayreuth keeps a low profile on the subject of managing director. However, it is certain that the Bundesliga club has been looking for a successor as managing director since the departure of philipp galewski, who moved to the bayreuth company cybex at the end of february. werner pfauntsch is currently holding the office on an interim basis. Thus the club takes into account the demand of the league for a full-time managing director.
"We talked to many candidates, one of whom was wolfgang heyder", says sven ammon, head of the bayreuth media department. "But no decision has been made, and we are not under any time pressure. the supervisory board is in the process of filtering out the right candidate for the important managing director position."
Many years of experience
and many arguments are likely to speak in favor of heyder. For around four decades, the man from podeldorf has been active and successful as a trainer, manager, advisor and functionary. When he took over as managing director of the bamberger bundesliga club in 1999, the club was facing financial and sporting problems. in 2014, at the end of his time with the brose team, heyder looked back on six championships – from 2010 to 2012, brose bamberg even won the double three times. without heyder, the bamberger’s rise to become germany’s basketball showcase would probably not have been possible.
After parting company with brose, heyder also worked for the rockets gotha and led the handball team of HSC 2000 coburg to the first national league as manager.
